This highly practical course will give you the skills and knowledge needed to become a junior within the hairdressing industry.You'll train in the College's hairdressing salon which takes on real-life clients, and learn about hair styling, shampooing, health and safety, industry standards and preventing dermatitis.
What will I learn?
You will learn about: the hair & beauty industry; styling ladies' and gents' hair; the art of dressing hair (hair up); creating a theme to include hair; make-up and nails; nail art; preventing dermatitis; and maintaining retail displays (run in conjunction with the Business department and retail shop on campus). Practical skills are developed on fellow students prior to work on clients.
The course has a strong vocational emphasis, allowing you to develop practical skills recognised by employers. You'll be encouraged to develop your own abilities, and also to communicate and interact with external clients. This qualification will require you to develop an effective working methodology, which will enable you to react positively and creatively across a diverse range of assignments and creative activities.
How will I be assessed?
You will be continually assessed throughout the course and will complete practical assessments on paying clients as well as written assignments and online tests. You will create a portfolio of evidence to display your achievement.
What may it lead to?
This can lead to the Level 2 Hairdressing course at Canterbury College. Entry onto an apprenticeship scheme or employment as a junior within the hairdressing industry.
You will need 5 GCSEs, two of which must be grade D in both Maths and English. The other GCSEs must be grade E in any subject.
Additional Information & Other Costs
Students will need to purchase (uniform and hairdressing kit from our approved suppliers) and must abide by our professional dress code. More information will be given in the interview. Work experience is highly recommended but not essential. Fee-paying models may be required for some assessments. Course fee: To be discussed at interview.
This qualification will form the main part of your Canterbury College study programme. Our study programmes combine your main qualification and may involve work experience and Maths & English sessions.
